Alipic skin, lacks sebum and lipids

Symptoms

Alipic skin lacks natural oils, existing in two forms based on the degree of oil scarcity: moderately dry and severely dry. This type of skin presents a matte appearance, with closed pores, and tends to shed in either a powdery or flaky way, making it feel rough and coarse. It frequently shows redness upon contact. Alipic skin faces challenges in dealing with water, soap, and extreme weather conditions. Although it typically exhibits a bright complexion, its look can swiftly alter due to external factors.
What causes alipic skin

External Factors:

  • Improper Skin Care: Using harsh skincare products that strip the skin of its natural oils.
  • Harsh Cleansers and Soaps: Products containing strong detergents or alcohol can remove the skin’s protective lipid barrier.
  • Extreme Weather Conditions: Cold, dry winter air and hot, arid summer climates can dehydrate the skin.
  • Environmental Pollutants: Exposure to pollutants and harsh chemicals can damage the skin’s surface.

Internal Factors:

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Changes in hormone levels can affect the skin’s oil production.
  • Metabolic Disorders: Conditions that affect the body’s ability to maintain moisture and lipid levels in the skin.
  • Aging: Natural aging processes reduce the skin’s ability to retain moisture and produce oils.
  • Genetic Factors: Some people are naturally predisposed to having drier skin types.
How to manage alipic skin

Steer clear of substances that are extremely acidic or alkaline, and avoid harsh scrubbing or practices that dry out the skin. When selecting makeup, opt for the highest quality you can afford, aiming for products with minimal powder content. It’s also advisable to forgo acids and mechanical peels entirely.

Instead, incorporate skin-neutral cleansing milk and products tailored for sensitive skin into your routine, utilizing ingredients like chamomile, azulene, squalane, and aloe vera for their soothing properties.

Regular moisturization is crucial; apply a rich moisturizer immediately after bathing and as needed throughout the day, choosing formulas enriched with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and natural oils to effectively seal in moisture. Plant oils, including castor oil, pomegranate seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, and black cumin oil, are highly beneficial for soothing and caring for dry skin.

Lastly, protect your skin by wearing appropriate clothing and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to guard against harmful UV rays and adverse weather conditions.

Curiosities

Back in the 1920s, for dry skin, pharmacies sold an affordable, greasy ointment known as “Créme celeste” (sky cream). This cream mainly consisted of petroleum jelly, lanolin, and sometimes white wax and spermaceti.

People also had high hopes for a cocoa butter cream made with ingredients like cocoa butter, almond oil, orange blossom oil, and cinnamon oil, as well as “Kaloderma,” a gel made from white gelatin, glycerin, and honey. “Honey-Jelly” was a popular day cream, crafted from gelatin, borax, honey, glycerin, rose water, terpineol, geranium oil, orange blossom oil, and bergamot oil.

In rural areas, where harsh weather conditions were common, dry skin was a frequent issue. For a long time, people used simple lard to treat it, but its high cholesterol content ended up making the symptoms of dry skin even worse over time.

Vintage Beauty routine for alipic skin

STEP 1: CLEANSE

It is very important to only use skin-neutral cleansing milk, suitable for sensitive skin. Vintage Beauty cleansing lotion is mild yet effective enough to remove impurities and makeup and can be safely used as part of the evening skincare routine.

STEP 2: EXFOLIATE

We strongly advise steering clear of acids and mechanical peels, suggesting instead the Vintage Beauty Enzymatic Peel. This product, both mild and efficient, removes dead skin cells while preserving the skin’s natural barrier. For optimal results, apply it twice weekly following a facial cleanse.

For extra nourishment we recommend using the Vintage Beauty Skin Food serum twice a day as part of your morning and evening routine.

STEP 4: MOISTURIZE

Hydrating alipic skin is essential to restore its natural oils and moisture levels, thus averting dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Our Vintage Beauty Wind & Winter Cream, as well as the Vintage Beauty Care Cream, are both excellently suited for rejuvenating dry, alipic skin.

For those experiencing particularly severe dryness, the Care Crear Cream, as well as the Vintage Beauty Cream may be the preferable option. However, for individuals dealing with rosacea in addition to dryness, the Wind & Winter Cream could be a more fitting selection.

STEP 5: UV PROTECTION

Exposure to the sun can exacerbate the dryness in this skin type by reducing the moisture and essential oils on the skin’s surface. After sun exposure, dry skin may look noticeably dehydrated, exhibit flakiness, and feel tight. Therefore it is important to wear protective clothing and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield your skin from harmful UV rays and extreme weather conditions.

We recommend using Vintage Beauty sun cream with SPF 50 as part of your morning routine to protect your skin from further damage.

SHOWER / BATH

For cleansing, opt for the Vintage Beauty Shower and Bath Oil, which is also suitable for your face. Enriched with six skin-soothing oils, this product is highly effective in restoring the skin’s natural oils.
